He is Not Ashamed

“That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers…Since therefore the children
share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through
death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and
deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.”

Beloved Kinney,

I wonder how often you feel like Jesus is ashamed of you. He’s ashamed of how much
you neglect him in prayer. He’s ashamed of how much you prefer your work above him.
He’s ashamed of your gross sin. He’s ashamed of your little faith. You just sense that
the main disposition Jesus has towards you is…ashamed.

Did you read the passage above? What does it say? “He is not ashamed to call them
brothers.” Who’s that talking about? “Brothers” is the word for all believers; it could be
translated “brothers and sisters.” It’s not exclusive to male believers; it’s talking about all
those in the family of Christ.

He is not ashamed of any who are in his family. Here’s how Erik Raymond puts it in a
book called He is Not Ashamed: The Staggering Love of Christ for His People…

Jesus is not ashamed of his people because they are the ones on
whom God set his love before the foundation of the world (Eph. 1:4-5).
God’s people are Christ’s people (John 17:6). We are the children that
God has given him (Heb. 2:13). Jesus is not ashamed of his family
photo because he loves every single one of us. He is well aware of our
baggage and he loves us anyway. He always has and always will.
Nothing we think or do could ever overturn such divine love to his
children. (pg. 21)

Isn’t this staggering? Jesus truly is not ashamed of you. Truly. This is not something
Christians say just to make themselves feel better (though it does!). This is truth. This is
reality. Jesus is not ashamed.

You know that…you can bank on that because he laid down his life for you. He would
not have died a horrific death, full of excruciating agony, bearing the weight of God’s full
fury because of your sin…IF he was ashamed of you. He did that because he is, in fact,
NOT ashamed of you. He did that because he loves you. Truly.
