Corporate Praying

Beloved Kinney,

This is the last post on our series on prayer. Here’s the working definition of prayer I’ve
provided: Prayer is our word-response to God’s initiating word that expresses our faith-filled dependence on him, as his redeemed children. This week I want to talk about the implications of corporate prayer with God’s people.

When the early church in the book of Acts gathered, there were four main practices they devoted themselves to. Acts 2:42, “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” These are the things the first church was devoted to: the teaching of the Word, fellowship with one another, the Lord’s Supper, and prayer. A church is not a healthy church that is not devoted to these things.

This is why we spend so much time praying every Sunday. Did you know we pray five times in our service? The Call to Worship, the Pastoral Prayer, before the sermon, after the sermon, and the Prayer of Confession before the Lord’s Supper. We pray a lot!

Is your heart devoted to the corporate prayers of the church? Do you engage in the prayers of the church or does your mind check out? Let me encourage us to engage! Devote yourself to it!

Praying together as a church is vital for our health as church. Prayer is life-giving. It fuels our
faith in the Lord. It shapes us as a church.

So let me encourage us to devote ourselves to the corporate prayers of the church. Don’t check out. Engage. It is a glorious privilege to pray together as a church.

Love,
Pastor Josh
