Beloved Kinney,
A while back, I read a book called Friendship with God: A Path to Deeper Fellowship
with the Father, Son, and Spirit by Mike McKinley. It’s a wonderful book! I commend it to
you.
The theme of the book aligns well with the message from this past Sunday: cultivating
communion with God. Here’s what McKinley says, “Our union with God is a gift we are
given; we don’t do anything except receive it by faith. Our communion with God,
however, is like any other friendship; it is an active, two-way street.” (pg12)
It is important for us to realize that, like any relationship, it requires both parties to do
their part for the relationship to flourish. No doubt, God is faithful to do his part—he
never leaves us, he always cares for us, he is constantly speaking to us in his Word.
But sometimes we wane in our pursuit of communion with God. Ask yourself, “What am
I doing to cultivate fellowship with the Lord? How can my prayer life grow? How can my
enjoyment of God increase? How can my Bible reading come to life?”
Here’s one simple thing I try to do before I open the Word each morning. I prayer this
simple prayer: “Lord, show me wonderful things about you in your Word today.”
God loves to answer that prayer! Pray it, and may it be one means by which you grow in
greater communion with God.
Love,
Pastor Josh
