Beloved Kinney,
I recently read a book called Redemption Song by Sean Demars. (It will be a book giveaway
soon!) In chapter 3, entitled “Sing Together,” Demars argues that the reason we sing together is because we’ve been saved together. In other words, we are all saved, and we all have been saved the same way—by grace alone through faith alone in the finished work of Christ alone. Therefore, the reason the New Testament emphasizes that we must sing together is because we’ve been saved together.
Here's how Demars puts it, “Modern western Christians have been trained to think of salvation through the lens of individualism, but the gospel says that God is not merely saving individuals for Himself, He’s saving a people…So when you think about singing songs of worship to God, learn to think less about me and more about we…The highest priority of Christian singing should be with the people of God as we journey towards the Promised Land together.” (pg.35)
Consider this truth on your way to church this Sunday: My singing on Sundays is not mainly
about me; it’s about all of us together declaring, with one voice, the goodness of God in
rescuing us all from our sins. That’s a reason to sing together.
Love,
Pastor Josh
