With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God. (Mark 10:27)
Beloved Kinney,
I wonder when the last time was that you reflected upon your salvation…I mean, really dwelled upon how you got saved. What did it take for you to get saved? Just a little help from God? A nudge in the right direction?
Left to ourselves, salvation is impossible.
Jesus says in Mark 10:23, ““How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the
kingdom of God!” This statement was given in response to the rich man who turned away from Jesus because he was unwilling to let go of his treasures on earth. It is difficult for the rich to enter heaven.
What does Jesus mean by difficult? Does he mean, “Very challenging but possible”? That can’t be what he means because he goes on to say, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” (v25) To which the disciples ask, “Then who can be saved?” (v26)
Who can be saved? Who is able…has the ability…the power to be saved? Answer: No one.
We must feel the utter impossibility of salvation left to ourselves if we’re going to truly grasp
the greatness of the power it took to save us. That’s why Jesus answers the disciples question this way: “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.”
In light of the context, the word possible doesn’t merely mean conceivable. It means doable in the sense that, God does it! Apart from his effectual intervention, salvation is impossible. But when he intervenes, he makes possible (doable—he does it!) the impossible.
Many of you invited non-Christian friends, family, and coworkers to our Easter gathering this
past Sunday. Many of you have been praying for a loved one to come to Christ and it feels
impossible. You’ve been agonizing over a friend who continues to reject the gospel. You can’t imagine what it would look like for this or that person to be saved.
Oh beloved Kinney, God makes possible the impossible. With man, it is impossible. You can't convince them. They can’t bring themselves to be saved. But God…
God can. Pray that he will. And remember, if God saved you, he is able save anyone!
Love,
Pastor Josh
